Liverpool have been in talks to sign Lille’s giant centre-back Leny Yoro but they are now facing competition from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

The 19-year-old is already a very talented player and his stats over the last years suggest he is already one of the best in Europe, outranking Virgil van Dijk in a few key categories.

His coaches say he is on an “accelerated learning curve” given that he only spent two years playing for the Nice academy.

Now, he is being targeted by the biggest clubs in the world.

Liverpool and Man Utd said to be in “advanced” talks to sign Leny Yoro

Liverpool are ready to sign “a nice cheque” to sign Leny Yoro as French news outlet le10sport reports that Liverpool, along with the two Manchester clubs, have “made contact”.

They have all held discussions over a potential transfer move with Lille president Oliver Letang reportedly resigned to losing the teenager. He is apparently “aware that it will be difficult to keep his player for very long.”

The source states Liverpool and Manchester United talks with Lille are “advanced” and he could be the answer to Jurgen Klopp’s search for a new centre-back if the Reds can beat the competition to his signature.

According to Telefoot, via Diario AS, Real Madrid are one of the favourites to sign Yoro.

It’s also reported that Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are also in the mix, alongside Los Blancos, as a three-horse race heats up for one of the most exciting defender talents in Europe.

Atletico Madrid are also interested, however, the financial disparity between Atleti and Liverpool, Real Madrid and PSG means it may be a transfer that is out of their reach.

Yoro reportedly has a scary €90 million (£78M) release clause in his contract with Lille which is scheduled to expire on 30 June 2025.

Liverpool are confirmed to be in discussions with Colombian 20-year-old Kevin Mantilla.

In late December, Liverpool were said to be tracking the defender, as per a report from AS, and their interest has officially been confirmed by CA Talleres president, Andrés Fassi.

As quoted by La Voz, the 61-year-old said: “It’s true, they have been following him for four months now. And they asked us for information about his physical records.”

Who is Kevin Mantilla?

kevin mantilla ca talleres colombia

Mantilla is the latest defender to join Liverpool’s extensive transfer shortlist as Jurgen Klopp targets a new centre-back after Joel Matip’s ACL rupture.

The Cameroonian needs to be replaced, especially with this contract set to expire in less than six months, and Mantilla is now on the Reds’ transfer radar.

The centre-back is just 20 years old and stands at a whopping 1.91m (six foot three). From a physical point of view, Mantilla is well-equipped to deal with the Premier League’s intensity.

His contract with CA Talleres only expires on 31 December 2027 and is represented by the Alinea agency. They mostly represent Colombian players, including Anderson Arroyo and David Ospina.

Why are Liverpool interested?

As already mentioned, Liverpool need a replacement for Matip due to his injury and contract situation.

Stylistically, he is more than suited to Klopp’s style of play.

Much like Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, Mantilla is an accomplished 1v1 tackler and is more than capable of stopping counter attacks on his own.

His tackling and interceptions stand out but his aerial presence is a major plus. Mantilla is also puts his massive frame to brilliant use, blocking crosses and shots like his life depends on it.

However, he does have a tendency to over-commit to risky challenges that he won’t get away with in the Premier League.

The step up to the English top flight is a difficult one to make but Liverpool never rush signings into the starting lineup unless they are ready.

Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo are perfect examples of this. The latter has finally found his feet at Anfield while Gravenberch is still raw and being eased into life in the Premier League.

When might Liverpool sign Mantilla?

This is only speculation but a deal for the summer could be arranged with CA Talleres.

Given he is relatively unknown and is playing in an obscure league, Liverpool could also be able to secure a bargain fee.

Of course, buying players without European experience is a risk but if there’s a coach that can get the best out of Mantilla, it’s Klopp.

French outlet L’Equipe reports that Liverpool are already “in contact” with Mbappe and his entourage over a potential move to Anfield ahead of the 2024/25 season.

It would be one of the biggest transfer coups of all time but remains a highly unlikely transfer.

It is encouraging to learn, however, that Madrid are not confident they can beat Liverpool to the French striker’s signature.

Real Madrid consider signing Kylian Mbappe to be “almost impossible”

Liverpool are planning crucial talks with Mbappe but a new claim suggests that Madrid are resigning themselves to missing out on the chance to sign the Paris Saint-Germain superstar.

kylian mbappe paris saint germain champions league

According to journalist José Félix Díaz, Real Madrid see their chances of signing Erling Haaland as very distant while they consider signing Kylian Mbappe as “almost impossible.”

For the time being, Los Blancos are NOT considering a move to sign the 25-year-old.

If reports are true and Liverpool are indeed in dialogue with Mbappe and planning to offer him a contract to move to the Premier League, this will come as a welcome update.

Ezoic

However, signing Mbappe would not be an entirely happy affair as it may mean Mohamed Salah must leave the club to fund the transfer.

Liverpool can only sign Mbappe if they sell Mo Salah

According to the Telegraph’s journalist Jason Burt, Mbappe has “genuine affection” for Liverpool given his mother and agent is a supporter of the Merseyside club’s.

However, Burt delivers a bleak line when he writes that signing Mbappe would hinge on letting Salah move to the Saudi Pro League.

mohamed salah liverpool premier league

Burt continued: “But if there was any chance of a deal it would take an awful lot of working parts to connect and probably, not least, the departure of Mohamed Salah to Saudi Arabia to help finance it.”

The reason Salah would need to leave is because Liverpool would not be able to afford his salary in addition to the mega contract Mbappe wants to join his next club.

Allegedly, the forward “expects a salary of £64.5 million a year.” To make this more astonishing, he wants this sum after tax.

“That equates to £1.24 million a week,” Burt says.

If Liverpool pull this off, it would be a miracle but signing the exceptionally talented striker is not worth it if it means the Reds have to sell Salah.

David Ornstein has recently suggested that Salah may still decide to remain at Liverpool and extend his contract but only time will tell if that is to come to pass.
