John Aldridge previews Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League match at Manchester City in the second part of his weekly column.
It makes no difference when Liverpool visits the Etihad Stadium because they will almost always be facing a team that has won 20 games in a row.
I know a lot of Manchester City fans, and one of their main concerns is Liverpool. While they’ve dictated, only Liverpool has laid a glove on them, so they’re not afraid of anyone else.
Having said that, our recent form there has been dismal, and this is cause for concern.
You can’t go there and play an attacking philosophy, in my opinion, and I’m not questioning anyone at the club or Jurgen Klopp in any way.
To be sure, the new midfield is full of energy. They can be hurt by Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, but they’ll also need a deep-lying midfielder. I believe Wataru Endo is the only one available right now, so he’ll have to be careful with his tackles.
We’ll see who he chooses, but I think you have to go there with the mindset of what we did at Newcastle or almost did at Tottenham when we were down to 10 or nine men – all dig in and defend. The only way to beat Manchester City is to frustrate them.
Liverpool on the break is devastating, and they are one of the best in the business, so if we can get back behind the ball, defend like we did at St. James Park and Tottenham, and then unleash the three strikers, we can win the game.
I’m not sure when they last didn’t score at home, so you just have to go about it the right way and outscore them. If you try to go head-to-head with them, as we have on a few occasions, you will fail 90 percent of the time. It was going to be a difficult afternoon.
To do this job, I’d take Joel Matip, then Joe Gomez over Kostas Tsimikas because he’s a better defender. That’s the route I’d take, but you have to trust the manager and be able to defend there without being caught off guard.
Tsimikas has lapses in concentration that you can’t afford against Man City – you have to be 100 percent on ready to defend it.
