I Know I Can Do Better: Jessica Pegula Reflects on Recent Losses After She Was…

Jessica Pegula, currently the highest-ranked American woman in tennis, has had a mixed 2024 season, facing both triumphs and setbacks. Known for her powerful groundstrokes and resilient mindset, Pegula has been candid about her recent performances, acknowledging the challenges that come with staying at the top level of the sport.

Following a string of early exits in key tournaments, including a surprising defeat in the quarterfinals of the US Open, Pegula has opened up about the difficulties of maintaining consistency on the WTA Tour. “It’s been frustrating at times,” she admitted in a recent interview. “I’ve had moments where I felt my game was right there, and then others where things just weren’t clicking. But I know I can do better, and I’m determined to make the necessary adjustments.”

Pegula has been a steady presence in the top 10, earning respect not only for her tennis but also for her work ethic and calm demeanor on and off the court. She’s quick to recognize the growing depth in women’s tennis, where any player in the top 50 is capable of pulling off an upset. “The competition is tougher than ever, so there’s not much room for error. Every match is a battle, and it’s about finding the right balance mentally and physically.”

Despite the recent challenges, Pegula remains focused on her long-term goals. “I’m not letting a few losses shake my confidence. This is all part of the process, and I’m learning from every match, whether I win or lose. My team and I are working on the small details, and I’m confident that will pay off.”

As she looks ahead to the remainder of the season, Pegula is determined to finish strong, with her sights set on continuing to break barriers for American tennis. “It’s been a great journey so far, but I know there’s more to accomplish. I’m not done yet.”

The China Open schedule confirmed that Carlos Alcaraz will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on the second most important court. While Alcaraz is scheduled to play around 3 pm local time at the Lotus Court, the Central Court will host second seed Jessica Pegula against Diane Parry.
Alcaraz had played on Center Court in his last tournaments consecutively since the Wimbledon quarterfinals, where the organization decided to send Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev to Center Court, while the Spaniard played on the second court in his win against Tommy Paul.

Alcaraz’s match shifted to Secondary Court

The high demand for Alcaraz’s matches has meant he has played on the main stadium in 50 of his 52 matches this season. The Center Court Capital Group Diamond has a capacity of 15,000 people, while the Lotus Court holds around 10,000 spectators.

The 4-time Grand Slam champion recently commented on the increasing number of matches and tournaments leading to constant player injuries: “A lot of players say that it’s really tight and a lot of tournaments during the whole year,” he said.
“I’m the kind of player who thinks there are a lot of tournaments during the year, mandatory tournaments and probably during the next few years there will be even more tournaments, more mandatory tournaments,” the world No. 3 added. “So, I mean, probably they are going to kill us in some way. Right now, a lot of injuries are showing up because of the ball, because of the calendar, because of a lot of things.”

“So probably at some point, a lot of good players are going to miss many tournaments because of that, because they have to think about their bodies, they have to take care of their health,” Carlos Alcaraz concluded.
