Several tennis fans shared their concerns following Holger Rune’s latest loss. The Dane crashed out of the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships with an opening-round defeat to Jordan Thompson.

Rune, the seventh seed, was defending his semifinal run from last year at the ongoing event. The 21-year-old was off to a promising start against Thompson, winning the opening set 6-4. He also found himself three points away from winning the match during the second set tiebreak, which ultimately went his opponent’s way 7-6 (4).

Holger Rune was unable to recover from the setback and was beaten by Jordan Thompson 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3. This was his 13th loss of the year, having won just 22 matches.

Rune’s best result so far this season has come at the Brisbane International, where he finished as the runner-up against Grigor Dimitrov. At the Australian Open, he suffered a second-round exit against fellow 21-year-old Arthur Cazaux. At the French Open, Rune was knocked out by eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev in the fourth round.

It is worth noting that at this point last year, Holger Rune had defended his title in Munich, featured in two Masters 1000 finals in Monte-Carlo and Rome, and made a second consecutive quarterfinal appearance at the French Open.

Tennis fans were thus concerned by the former World No. 4’s decline.

“It’s weird because Rune has had patches of good form even this year. I gave him a pass during that back injury saga last year but right now I don’t really know what he’s doing with his play style. The other thing is he’s not making any returns in the court. I have no clue what the deal is with that, but it’s very hard to win matches when you are quite literally the worst serve/return player in the top 20, and that’s not an exaggeration,” one fan said on Reddit.

Jordan Thomspon, meanwhile, is enjoying the best season of his career despite his wavering form. He won his maiden ATP title at Los Cabos, beating Casper Ruud in the final. En route, he also beat Alexander Zverev. At the Brisbane International he defeated Rafael Nadal.

“Thompson is such a confusing player. I remember him winning against the likes of Casper, Rafa, Zverev, and now Holger but also lost to qualifiers,” one fan said.

A few fans pointed fingers at the seeming instability in Holger Rune’s coaching team. The 2022 Paris Masters champion has made several changes to his team in recent months. After initially ending his partnership with Lars Christensen and Patrick Mouratoglou, he teamed up with Boris Becker and Severin Luthi. However, just a few months later, he rehired Mouratoglou.

“I’m so sad for Rune. He’s got all the potential, it’s just not materialising yet for whatever reason. I am tempted to say “the team” but I’m just biased against Patrick. There’s no real clue that’s the problem,” one fan said.

“What is with this Rune character? Gets to top 10 as a teen, beats Novak in 1000 final way back then playing excellent brave tennis, then is basically like a sub-Rublev player. Does not seem to have developed his game in last season and a half,” another fan said.

“Rune is not playing like a generation talent ready to compete for slam . Awful performance on tour is becoming constant weekly,” one individual chimed in on X.

“Thompson that can’t even beat an unfit (Milos Raonic)??? Damn Rune is truly finished,” yet another fan said, referring to the Aussie’s recent opening-round exit in ‘s-Hertogenbosch

Amid his on-court struggles, Holger Rune will soon be faced with the daunting task of defending his quarterfinal run at the upcoming Wimbledon Championships.

Last year, the Dane earned 360 points after making the final eight at SW19 for the first time in his career. At this stage, he succumbed to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.

The World No. 15 would look for a quick turnaround in hopes of preventing a further ranking drop. While he isn’t scheduled to compete at any events before the Grand Slam, it remains to be seen if he accepts a wildcard following his premature exit at the Queen’s Club Championships.
