‘He will score five’… Chris Sutton says £70m Liverpool player is about to absolutely explode

Liverpool need to find a new source of goals soon.

The Reds are about to lose Mohamed Salah to the African Cup of Nations for a number of weeks, and their other attackers now need to step up.

Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota will all get chances to shine during this period, but Darwin Nunez may well be the one player who is expected to really raise his game at this point.

The £70m striker has shown glimpses of brilliance over the past few months, but he’s scarcely found the back of the net, and now, without Salah in the team, he needs to start scoring more.

Speaking on the Fantasy 606 Podcast, Chris Sutton has been discussing Nunez and he says that the Uruguayan is about to become his captain in FPL, claiming that he’s due to score a barrel load of goals very soon.

Nunez could be about to hit form

Sutton shared his verdict on the Uruguayan.

“That’s the pick I think, Darwin Nunez, he’s due a barrel load isn’t he? In one of these games he will score five,” Sutton said.

Main man

This could be just what Nunez needs to find his goalscoring form at Liverpool.

For the first time since his arrival last summer, Nunez will now genuinely havae the chance to be the main man in Liverpool’s attack, and that may mean he thrives.

When he was at Benfica, he was at his best when he was the focal point of the team’s attack, but due to Salah’s presence at Anfield, he’s never been afforded that luxury.

As we all know, Nunez has the attributes needed to be a superstar, and now, he could be about to show the world just how brilliant he can be when he’s trusted to be the main source of goals in a team.

Don’t be shocked if Nunez goes on a bit of a run now.

Liverpool is now heading into a tough FA Cup clash against Arsenal this weekend, as it looks to balance another competition after progressing in the Carabao Cup, Europa League and topping the Premier League standings. The Reds could hardly have got a harder tie.

The manic Christmas period is now over, with wins recorded against West Ham United, Burnley and Newcastle United, as well as draws against Arsenal and Manchester United, as the club now looks ahead to maintaining their momentum throughout 2024. But the games continue to come thick and fast.

A key determinant of how well Liverpool does for the remainder of the campaign could be whether or not the Reds can do any business during the month of January. Jürgen Klopp really needs an addition to bolster his defense which has been plagued by injury throughout the 2023/24 campaign. Joël Matip is in the middle of a lengthy period on the sidelines, while the likes of Ibrahima Konaté and Joe Gomez have both suffered previous setbacks earlier on in the season.

While the club will be concentrating on their own form and transfer activity in the coming weeks, they must also keep one eye on their rivals across European football. Here is the Liverpool.com take on some of the biggest stories around European football today ahead of the FA Cup clash this weekend.

Kylian Mbappé ‘agrees to sacrifice $87m’

Paris Saint Germain star Kylian Mbappé has agreed to sacrifice a loyalty bonus worth in the region of $87m (£69m/€80m), according to Caught Offside, in order to help out the Ligue 1 side. But he could still depart the French capital this summer, with the waived payment essentially in exchange for a lack of a transfer fee if he departs as a free agent.

Mbappé, who had previously been axed from the PSG squad throughout the summer after failing to agree on a one-year extension, was then reintegrated into the squad for the 2023/24 campaign, with an $87m loyalty bonus being handed to the player after he remained at the club after the summer transfer window. It was a payment that Mbappé agreed to sacrifice in a bid to secure a move away from the club next summer.

The 25-year-old superstar has now entered the final six months of his deal at the Ligue 1 champion, with the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool supposedly looking to secure one of the most high-profile free transfers in the history of the game. Foreign clubs can now look to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with Mbappé due to his expiring contract, with the player previously revealing his admiration for Liverpool back in 2022.

“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favorite club of my mum,” Mbappé told the Telegraph in 2021. “I don’t know why, you will have to ask her! It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club.”

Liverpool.com says: Mbappé is arguably the best player in the world currently and signing him on a free transfer could be the greatest signing in the modern era. Real Madrid has been heavily linked as the favorite for the player in recent years and poses a real threat, however Liverpool should capitalize on Mbappe’s admiration for the club if there is any chance of a deal.

Chelsea ‘gets huge striker transfer update’

Girona co-owner, Pere Guardiola, has squashed the rumors of a transfer exit for Artem Dovbyk, with the club currently sitting level on points with Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table. Dovbyk, 26, has scored 11 goals across 16 league games so far this season, which has since sparked the interest of clubs such as Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino, according to Mundo Deportivo (as translated by Sport Witness), was looking to secure the signing of a lethal goalscorer in the near future. However, the Chelsea boss will likely have to turn his attention to other strikers in the January transfer window, after Pep Guardiola’s brother quickly addressed the rumors surrounding Dovbyk, who shares the same agent as Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk.

“There are no offers,” he said. “Rumors, all of them. We don’t have offers for anyone. Not from Barcelona for Aleix [Garcia], not from Chelsea for Dovbyk, for anyone. And we have no intention of selling to anyone either. The thing is that journalists really like the transfer window.”

Liverpool.com says: This will offer a huge boost to Liverpool in the future, as Chelsea could pose a threat to the Reds following their strong investment in seasons to come, despite their current struggles. The longer Chelsea struggle to sign their first-choice striker, the longer Liverpool have one less team to contend with.
