A number of players released by Premier League teams remain without a club with the season underway

Manchester City got the defence of their Premier League title off to the perfect start with a 3-0 victory at newly-promoted Burnley on Friday night.

 

 

 

 

Erling Haaland netted twice in the first half at Turf Moor with Rodri adding a third 15 minutes from the end. With the season underway, a number of

players released at the end of last campaign remain on the free agent market.

Manchester United kick off their season at home to Wolves on Monday night, as they begin their second campaign under Erik ten Hag.

It is unlikely that City or United will be turning to the free agent market during the transfer window but there are a handful of players let go by the

Red Devils who are yet to find a club – and Manchester World has looked at who the 24 free agents from Premier League teams are below…

Burnley were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City in the opening game of the new Premier League season on Friday night.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany suggested that Manchester City played his side at the right time following the visitors’ 3-0 opening night victory

at Turf Moor, saying his side’s showing will be the worst they produce all season.

The newly-promoted Clarets, fresh from winning the Championship title last season, were behind after only three minutes when Erling

Haaland struck to put City ahead. The Norway international fired home from Rodri’s ball into the box.

Burnley responded well to going behind, but were hit with a suckerpunch by Pep Guardiola’s side. Haaland finished clinically with a curling effort

into the top corner to double the visitors’ lead.

After the break Rodri fired home from close range to put City three goals to the good. The Clarets ended the game with ten men after Anass Zaroury

was dismissed for a challenge on Kyle Walker, which was looked at by VAR after an initial yellow card.

And speaking to Sky Sports after the loss, Kompany said: “Look, we had five guys who started for the first time for the club and a player who started

for the first time in his career and overall we had chances, and we knew it was going to be tough.

“We have to take the positives from this game. You can’t feel good with a defeat, but I have seen enough to show that we’ve made progress since the

last time we played them.

“And like I have said before, this is the worst we will be all season so this team is only going to get stronger.”

After the way in which Kompany transformed Burnley’s style of play and guided them to the Championship title last term, few are anticipating an

immediate return to the second tier for the Lancashire outfit this season. They offered glimpses of their capabilities against City that they will be able

to build on.

“It’s a mentality thing as well,” added Kompany. “It has to be the worst we are ever going to be this season because this team is focused on progress.

“I don’t know who in my squad will end up at the top level, but I think some players will.

“It takes hard work and, every day, this squad wants to progress. We also want to grow with the players that we have and that is a mission for us.

Results come because you do the work in the background and we have that here.”
