Lionel Messi has named a reported Liverpool transfer target as the world’s best young prospect.
Messi recently received his eighth Ballon d’Or trophy, naming him the world’s best player for the 2022/23 season.
During Monday night’s ceremony, the Kopa Trophy was also presented to the season’s best youngster. Although former Liverpool target Jude Bellingham won, journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed on Twitter that Messi did not vote for the Englishman in first place.
Instead, the Argentina legend named Reds target Jamal Musiala as the world’s best young player.
Liverpool have been linked with a surprise summer move for Musiala. Although the Bayern Munich midfielder appears uninterested in a move to Anfield, the speculation continues.
Messi’s acknowledgement of his burgeoning talent is yet more vindication that the Reds should do all they can to make this happen.
Messi praises Musiala.
The recent strength of reports linking Liverpool with an attempt to sign Musiala has come as a surprise.
But, much like Bellingham’s drawn-out saga, it doesn’t appear to be a race Liverpool will win.
It’s unclear why Musiala would leave Bayern. As a Germany international, he is in the best possible position.
The 20-year-old isn’t the team’s star player just yet, but he’ll get there. There’s no need to leave.
And, from the German champion’s perspective, why should they? Along with Messi’s endorsement, Musiala has received numerous accolades. Jurgen Klinsmann described him as a ‘phenomenal’ player [The Daily Mail], and he’s received plenty of other accolades. You don’t get rid of a player like that.
Nonetheless, rumors continue to circulate.
Given his high profile, Musiala appears likely to join a Manchester City or Real Madrid if he ever leaves Bayern.
But, as they did with Bellingham, Liverpool may still believe they have a chance. However, wherever Musiala ends up, this will not be his last recognition.
