Wesley Fofana discusses his optimism for struggling Chelsea and how being expelled from Saint-Etienne’s academy as a youngster shaped him;

Although Wesley Fofana narrates the tale with a smile, his feelings at the time were different. The £75 million center-back is reflecting on a time in his early years when it appeared a fledgling career would be cut short in a quiet area of Chelsea’s Cobham headquarters.

He had left his family’s home in Felix Pyat, a town in Marseille’s destitute third arrondissement, when he was 14 years old to enroll in the academy four hours away in Saint-Etienne. He was a gifted and courageous defender, but he was also unexperienced and unprepared.
