DONE DEAL: The club manager is stunned that Tottenham now has a 95% star on their roster as the deal is sealed.

Tottenham pulled off a coup of sorts by seeing off competition from some of Europe’s biggest names to land Lucas Bergvall earlier this month.

Sky Sports reported on 2 February that Spurs managed to persuade the youngster to make the move to North London rather than Barcelona.

Bergvall will not officially arrive until the summer, but supporters have every right to be excited about what the teenager can bring to the club.

Speaking to Spanish outlet Marca [19 February], Gran Canaria CEO Kevin Perez, who has seen Bergvall up close, is certainly a massive fan.

“Lucas is a dynamic player, technically very well gifted and who stands out with his final pass,” Perez said.

“Although he has just turned 18, he is a very mature and humble boy. I guess the experiences he has had have helped him.”

What position does Lucas Bergvall play?

Bergvall has only got one season of senior football under his belt with Swedish side Djurgarden, where he will stay for the rest of the campaign.

Both of those goals have come from inside the box, from two of 19 such attempts, so he is a player who likes to get into advanced areas.

However, Bergvall is not exactly trigger-happy as he has averaged just one shot per game across those 25 appearances thus far.

To put that into some context, Richarlison and James Maddison lead the way with an average of 2.5 per game for Spurs [WhoScored].

He is more in line with Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr, who average 1.1 and 1.4 shots per game on average.

Bergvall is capable of finding the net, then, but that is not exactly what his game is based around.

“Quality is his greatest weapon,” Perez added. “He has a brutal ability to control and play the ball.

“In addition, he moves with an elegance inappropriate for his age, that is which has caused teams like Barcelona to become interested in him.”

This is backed up by Bergvall’s 88-per-cent pass accuracy across the course of the campaign – a figure that rises to 95 per cent in his own half.

That 88-per-cent figure is in line with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (88.7 per cent) and Sarr (89 per cent), so he fits the bill in that regard.

Who does Lucas Bergvall compare to?

While it must be factored in that the Allsvenskan is clearly nowhere near the quality of the Premier League, it is all relative.

Perez added that Bergvall can also hold his own physically speaking as he measures over six foot in size and has “nine kilos of muscle mass”.

“Physically and football-wise he bears a great resemblance to Frenkie de Jong,” Perez said. “And not only because of that blonde hair.”

With an average of 0.4 interceptions per game, Bergvall is again in same ballpark as Hojbjerg (0.5). That number is also the same as Giovani Lo Celso has to his name.

Where Bergvall perhaps thrives most of all, though, is in terms of driving forward with the ball. This is reflected by his 1.1 dribbles per game.

Ange Postecoglou
Ange Postecoglou could have a future Tottenham gem on his hands in Lucas Bergvall

Again, for context, that is fewer only than Dejan Kulusevski (1.3) and Pedro Porro (1.9) at Tottenham in the Premier League this season.

This is not to say an 18-year-old relatively unknown player from Sweden is better than any of those aforementioned players just yet.

But given his age, the interest from Barcelona and the comparisons with De Jong, one thing is clear: Tottenham will have a real gem on their hands for years to come.

In other Tottenham news, a player turning heads out on loan could be ideal for Ange Postecoglou.
