Liverpool are vying to sign Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies next summer. Still only 23, Davies has been one of the world’s best left-backs over the last three or four years, but with only 18 months left on his contract, he could be on the move soon.
And, according to 90min, many of Europe’s top clubs, including Liverpool, are on standby just in case.
Unfortunately, it has been reported that the Reds do not believe they have a good chance of signing the Canadian. Instead, Liverpool, as well as Manchester City, Chelsea, PSG, and Bayern Munich, believe Davies is set on joining Real Madrid.
His current club, on the other hand, does not appear to have given up. Bayern are reportedly still trying to sign Davies to a new contract, but he has shown ‘little desire to commit’ thus far.
As a result, teams like Liverpool have been notified. But, for the time being, they are said to ‘ultimately believe’ that unless something drastic changes, Davies will go to prison Bernabeu.
Liverpool is hoping for a chance for Davies.
If Davies is indeed available next summer, Liverpool should make every effort to sign him.
Of course, the Reds still have Andy Robertson, with whom Davies has frequently competed for the title of ‘best left-back in the world’. However, Robbo will be 30 in March, and a succession plan may be required.
Kostas Tsimikas has demonstrated in recent weeks and months that he is not the man to replace Robertson on a full-time basis. He simply isn’t good enough. Davies, on the other hand, is.
Despite the fact that he only turned 23 earlier this month, the Canada international still has years to grow.
If Liverpool can persuade him to move to Anfield, they’ll have the position covered for the rest of Robertson’s career.
It would be a huge win for Liverpool. Fans have urged Jurgen Klopp to sign him as early as 2020. They’d like to sign a player who, at the age of 18, was deemed the ‘fastest in the Bundesliga’ by then-Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic [bundesliga.com].
‘Phonzy’s’ reputation has only grown since then. His time at Bayern Munich has been marked by success, with five league titles and a Champions League under his belt. But it’s easy to see how such domestic dominance could tire Davies out, and you can’t blame him for looking for a new challenge.
At the moment, it appears that the challenge will take place in Madrid. If Liverpool has any chance of changing that, they must do so.
