Prior to the start of the 2017 Premier League season, Sheffield Wednesday has been identified as one of three clubs with a strong
interest in Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper, who is presently representing England at the Under-21 European Championship, played the full
90 minutes as Lee Carsley’s team defeated Czechia 2-0 in their tournament opener on Thursday.
While on loan at League One team Bolton Wanderers, Trafford recently put together a fantastic year. He helped the Trotters
reach the play-off semifinals and win the Papa John’s Trophy with a 4-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at Wembley.
It is reported that the City youngster is being considered to test his abilities at a higher level after spending the last 18
months on loan at Bolton, where he made 74 appearances and kept 33 clean sheets.
The Blades are interested in playing at Old Trafford, according to journalist Alan Nixon, but Middlesbrough will be a strong
rival.
Middlesbrough benefited from a City goalkeeper last season when Zach Steffan helped them reach the Championship play-
offs before losing to Coventry in the semi-final to put an end to any hopes of returning to the Premier League.
The triple winners have reportedly ‘started talks’ with Premier League newcomers Burnley, according to Football Insider,
who also claims that Vincent Kompany is a ‘huge admirer’ of the young goalkeeper.
Owls consider move for Sunderland target
Even though they are still seeking to find a replacement for their former manager Darren Moore, Sheffield Wednesday are
still looking to bolster their squad as they get ready to return to the Championship.
Since the former Owls manager left his position at Hillsborough a week ago, a number of possible successors have already
expressed interest in taking over.
It will be necessary to move quickly in the transfer market regardless of who Moore is replaced by, and the Owls are
reportedly showing’strong interest’ in Everton striker Ellis Simms.
After a successful loan season at the Stadium of Light last year, The Northern Echo stated that Sunderland is interested in
the Toffees’ forward. However, Wednesday and fellow Championship newcomers Ipswich Town are also keeping an eye on
the issue.
