DONE DEAL JUST IN: Purdue confirm another 5-star freshman quarterback against Oregon football just now

Oregon is set to face Purdue and their redshirt-freshman quarterback, Ryan Browne, in Friday night’s matchup. Browne, who filled in for the injured Hudson Card during last week’s game against Illinois, will again start for the Boilermakers (1-5, 0-3 Big Ten) as they take on the No. 2 Ducks.

While Card, who has a history with Oregon’s offensive coordinator Will Stein from their high school days, could potentially play, his status remains uncertain as of Monday.

“We’re unsure if Hudson will be available,” said Purdue coach Ryan Walters. “Ryan Browne will start. His performance warrants it. We’ll evaluate Hudson’s availability going forward.”

Browne threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns, adding 118 rushing yards in Purdue’s 50-49 overtime loss to Illinois. His passing performance was the best since Card’s 323-yard effort against Syracuse last season. The Boilermakers fired offensive coordinator Graham Harrell after four games, prompting Walters, a defensive coach, to take over play-calling duties, which he will continue this week.

Browne, a former three-star recruit, was named Florida’s 8A Player of the Year and a runner-up for Mr. Football in 2021 after leading Venice High to a state championship. He joined Purdue in December 2022 after spending time at Milford Academy and redshirted last season, appearing in one game against Northwestern.

“He’s had strong practices recently,” Walters said. “His preparation was evident during the game, and I’m proud of his performance. I look forward to his continued growth this week.”
