Liverpool ‘plotting move’ for ‘stunning’ €80m player who has unusual release clause
Only a few months after acquiring Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig, Liverpool is reportedly interested in another member of the Bundesliga team.
The new appearance of Jurgen Klopp Liverpool has had an impressive start to the season thanks to the addition of several new players, including Szoboszlai.
This summer, the Reds also added Wataru Endo from Stuttgart and Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich to their roster.
Alexis Mac Allister also joined from Brighton.
If recent reports are to be accepted, Liverpool may attempt to raid the Bundesliga for another young talent.
According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool are keeping an eye on RB Leipzig forward Lois Openda, who joined from Lens in the summer and has already scored five goals and provided two assists in 10 games for his new team.
After being persuaded by Openda’s’stunning’ debut season in Ligue 1, during which he scored 21 goals in 38 games, Leipzig signed him in a deal worth an initial €43 million (£37 million).
The Belgian is now being linked with a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal and Manchester United also reportedly interested in the 23-year-old.
“Leipzig are a little relaxed at the moment, as next summer there’s no active release clause for Lois Openda,” wrote Falk, in Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing.
“It begins in 2025 and I heard it’s a bit higher than the €80m [£69m] that has been reported elsewhere.
“I’m sure that clubs like Liverpool will be keeping an eye on him. You’ve already seen with Dominik Szoboszlai that they’ve had a mostly positive experience with RB Leipzig players.
“It’s also worth noting the similarity in style between the two clubs, which is obviously of benefit to Liverpool.”
Speaking to BILD ahead of the new season, Openda said he had aspirations of becoming as good as Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane.
“Harry Kane is one of the best players in the world. He’s better than me. But that’s what drives me: I want to be at his level one day,” he said.
“I can do a lot more and that’s what I’m working on every day to get the best out of myself.”
This week, amid the VAR debate involving Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal, Klopp urged that Liverpool’s match against Tottenham Hotspur be replayed.
Neville, a former defender for Manchester United, called Klopp’s remarks “madness.”
Klopp couldn’t help but poke fun at the Nevilles in his remarks prior to Liverpool’s Premier League matchup against Brighton and Hove Albion. The video is available to view below.
In the 2-0 Europa League victory over Union Saint Gilloise on Thursday night, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister faced up against his brother Kevin, according to Klopp.
They are currently conducting 25 interviews in a row, according to the Reds manager.
“It’s a really nice story. It’s the first time two brothers have played against each other in world football, or whatever it felt like.”
A reporter then reminded Klopp that Gary and Phil Neville had already faced off.
The German responded in a humorous way: “Well, obviously, nobody was interested in that. I’m sorry, but I had to accept that punishment.
