Erling Haaland has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in the past but the goal-hungry Norwegian is not keen on sharing a dressing room with Kylian Mbappe as they both pursue personal accolades
Manchester City’s hopes of keeping Erling Haaland have been boosted by Real Madrid’s pursuit of Kylian Mbappe.
The reigning Premier League champions are desperate to tie the Norwegian striker down to a new contract which would see him remain at the Etihad until 2029. They are also eager to re-negotiate Haaland’s buy-out clause, which will kick in this summer at £171million.
It comes amid growing reports in Spain of Haaland seeking a move to the Spanish capital in two years’ time, having been linked with the 14-time Champions League winners in the past. Reports also stated Haaland is unhappy with living in the Manchester area.

Madrid tried to sign Haaland when he was contemplating his future at Borussia Dortmund a year-and-a-half ago. But Karim Benzema being the main man at the Bernabeu at the time made him opt for a move to City, who triggered his then £51m buy-out clause in the summer of 2022.
Now Haaland’s reported interest in signing for Los Blancos has been hampered again by another Frenchman. It emerged over the past week that Madrid want PSG sensation in just the latest twist in the World Cup winner’s long-running transfer saga.
Mbappe will leave the Ligue 1 champions at the end of his contract this season, with Real Madrid being his expected destination. There has, however, been talk in Spain that Real president Florentino Perez wishes to add the 25-year-old this summer, before turning his attention to Haaland the following year once his release clause drops to £150m.
But the financial cost would be huge, and The Mirror claims neither player would like that plan. The two goal machines see each other as rivals for the Ballon d’Or and think their chances of being seen as the best player in the world will drop if they are in the same team.
Haaland did not even consider joining PSG before he signed for the Treble winners. Yet the Norwegian powerhouse does dream of wearing the famous white shirt one day.

He is also smart enough to know he could stay in the Premier League for another three seasons and still not be at the height of his ability. Haaland scored 52 goals last season, helping City win a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup Treble, which earned him a hefty bonus in addition to his £375,000-per-week wages.
City are ready to increase Haaland’s basic salary but do not want to break their pay structure which rewards players for success. Before committing, Haaland also wants to know about Pep Guardiola’s future plans, as the City boss will have just 12 months left on his contract in the summer.
