DONE DEAL: 32 year old Sheffield Wednesday legend, makes promise on his future at the club after new contract being signed.

The winger has put pen to paper and will remain at Hillsborough after his previous deal expired at the end of the promotion-

winning 2022-23 campaign.

Hillsborough has received official word from Sheffield Wednesday that Marvin Johnson has renewed his contract there. The

32-year-old’s prior contract had expired after the successful 2022–23 season, but he will now continue to play for the Owls.

Johnson, who joined the team on a free transfer in the summer of 2021, will not extend his two-year contract with the

organization. He will continue to make appearances for Wednesday, where he has made 95 appearances and scored six

goals.

The Owls are now preparing for their return to the Championship after a hectic fortnight that was dominated by the

departure of Darren Moore and the subsequent ramifications from that surprising transfer. This comes after Recce James’

return to South Yorkshire on Friday.

Johnson told the Owls website that is pleased to see the core of the promotion squad still at Hillsborough as he vowed to give

it his all.

“Every time I put the shirt on I want to give 100%, you want to play every game and that’s my objective. It’s good to have the

core of the squad still here from last season and it gives us the morale and something to build off.

“We got the job done and now we need to build on that.”

Wednesday’s first pre-season match is a trip to York City next Saturday, with their Championship campaign starting with a

televised clash against Southampton under the Friday night lights on August 4.

What Sheffield Wednesday still need to do in summer transfer window after Reece James deal

Reece James is the first piece in Sheffield Wednesday’s summer transfer jigsaw but more additions need to be made for the

Owls to be competitive in the Championship next season.

They may be without a manager and a head of recruitment – but Sheffield Wednesday are up and running in the summer

transfer window. Reece James has returned to Hillsborough, joining the Owls for an undisclosed fee from Blackpool.

Wednesdayites desperately needed a lift after a chaotic 10 days or so and the permanent capture of James has undoubtedly

raised spirits among the fan-base. James acquitted himself well on loan at S6 last term and played a key part in their

promotion to the Championship.

Re-signing James is a shrewd piece of business from the Owls. With Marvin Johnson’s future still up in the

air, Wednesday required someone of James’ calibre to give them more options on the left hand side of their defence.

James is an experienced player and can play in multiple positions. His adaptability came to the fore several times last season

when Wednesday suffered injuries to key players at the back. Every successful team needs a player like James.

The 29-year-old represents the first piece in the Owls’ transfer jigsaw and it is a good, solid start, but more signings must

quickly follow if they are to successfully make the step up. The new season kicks off in the first week of August and

Wednesday still seem short on quantity and quality. Just 15 senior players reported in for the first day of pre-season training

yesterday.

The forward line is arguably the only area of the Owls’ squad that looks well-stocked, with Mallik Wilks, Michael Smith, Lee

Gregory and Josh Windass in their ranks. Will that quarter deliver and produce the goods in the Championship on a

consistent basis? Only time will tell.

But Wednesday’s number one priority right now has to be hiring a new manager as soon as possible. That is the biggest and

most important piece of them all.
