Dominik Szoboszlai relishing Steven Gerrard comparisons but admits he wants to forge own Liverpool legacy.

Dominik Szoboszlai admits he wants to be himself and forge his own legacy at Anfield amid comparisons with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

The Hungarian midfielder has hit the ground running since his £60m move for RB Leipzig this summer and has already scored two goals for the club, while his tireless running, creativity and versatility have also been on display several times in his young Liverpool career so far.

When asked about comparisons with Gerrard, Szoboszlai admits he feels nice to be likened to a Liverpool great but added that he wants to follow his own path at Anfield.

Speaking to the PA news agency at a session of the Nike Game On initiative, he said (quotes via Daily Mail):

“I want to do my own way but of course, it feels good if they say I am the new Steven Gerrard.

I have a tattoo from Steven Gerrard what he said a long time ago. It’s nice to have the number eight shirt because really great players played in it. I just want to continue.

But I just want to be myself and if I can get that big in this club like he was I’ll be really happy.”

Ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest, Szoboszlai said he’s willing to do whatever it takes for the Reds to continue their good start to the 2023-24 campaign, adding that he wants to win trophies and put Liverpool back where they belong.

He said: “If I have to score I am going to score. If I have to assist I am going to assist.

If I have to run all around the pitch I will run all around the pitch. I am here to help the team, I am not here to reach something alone.

I want to win trophies, I want to win everything and make us proud and make the fans proud and put Liverpool back again where they deserve to be.”

“95 per cent sure” – Dominik Szoboszlai explains role in Liverpool penalty Mohamed Salah scored.

Liverpool got the breakthrough against Everton when Mohamed Salah converted from the squad. Now, Dominik Szoboszlai has explained the key role he played.

In Liverpool’s recent victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby, Dominik Szoboszlai played a crucial role in Mohamed Salah’s game-changing penalty.

Salah scored two goals in the second half to secure a 2-0 win for Liverpool, with the first coming from the spot.

The breakthrough came in controversial circumstances. Luis Díaz’s cross was blocked by the hand of Everton defender Michael Keane, leading to a VAR review and a penalty decision in Liverpool’s favor.

During this decisive moment, Szoboszlai was seen holding the ball and protecting the penalty spot from any interference by Everton players.

Speaking after the game, the Hungarian midfielder explained his actions, saying, “To be honest, I saw it from behind, so I was probably 95 per cent sure that it was going to be a penalty.

I just held the ball so nobody took it and stood there to protect the penalty spot. Yeah, we are a team.”

Szoboszlai also shared his thoughts on his first experience of a Merseyside derby. Assessing both the atmosphere and the game itself, he reflected on a positive afternoon:

“It feels really good. As I said before, playing at Anfield is something special. I didn’t expect that, but yes it feels nice.

I expected it was going to be good, but I didn’t realize it would be this loud. I have played in a lot of stadiums, but this is one of the best.

“We were in a good position when they went to 10 men because at times this season, we have played with 10 or nine men.

I know how it feels to play with 10 men so I know how they feel. You have to be focused until the end — we take the three points and move on to the next game.”

Liverpool’s victory over Everton further solidified its impressive start to the Premier League campaign.

The win showcased its ability to capitalize on key moments and maintain its winning momentum.

Szoboszlai’s contribution in safeguarding the penalty spot highlighted the unity and teamwork within the squad.

As Liverpool continues its journey in the league, Szoboszlai’s presence and involvement in crucial situations could prove vital.

His understanding of the game and his commitment to the team’s success make him an asset to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool.com says: 95 per cent is about as sure as anyone can be about decisions these days, with consistency sorely lacking.

But despite the manufactured controversy, Szoboszlai is right that this was a clear penalty.

The Hungarian has been a revelation for Liverpool so far this season.

This latest incident underlines that he has the know-how to go along with his supreme talent and athleticism.
