Cowboys QB on Thin Ice After OTAs

Dallas Cowboys fans have a reason for excitement with the return of franchise quarterback Dak Prescott and the addition of star receiver George Pickens. Even in a loaded NFC East, the Cowboys believe they have the needed pieces to compete.

Former New England Patriot Joe Milton joined Dallas in the 2025 offseason, as the franchise traded for the exciting backup. Milton flashed his ability in last season’s final game, consistently moving the football with a less-than-ideal starting lineup.

As exciting as this move is, it does signal a demotion for Dallas backup Will Grier. The veteran backup is now looking at attempting to win the emergency quarterback role for the franchise.

Cowboys Quarterback Will Grier is on His Way Out

The Cowboys would be wise to move off Grier and bring in an option with an unknown upside. At this stage of Grier’s career, it is clear you aren’t going to get anything more out of the quarterback.

There isn’t a wrinkle you can run that makes the backup a viable option for the active roster, and the development appears to have stopped. With Milton providing a level of stability, it is time the Cowboys turn the page and opt to find another project quarterback to work with.

Even if the Cowboys don’t want to go the route of finding a project quarterback, there are a handful of veterans still looking for new landing spots. Tyler Huntley, Desmond Ridder, and Carson Wentz all offer far more starting experience than the current Dallas backup. While this isn’t the goal of the third quarterback role, it does make far more sense than continuing to carry a player who has clearly reached his ceiling.

It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see the franchise realize this and look to add even more security to the position. With Dak’s recent injury history the team will want to add every possible development option. This is exactly why Milton found his way to Dallas and why the team should continue to make changes and turn the page on Grier’s time with the franchise.
