Bitter Van Dijk embarrasses himself with Man Utd comments after draw
Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has made a few comments that have not gone down well with the Manchester United faithful following the 0-0 draw.
The pressure was on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to get a result at Anfield with Manchester United coming into the game off the back of back-to-back defeats as well as elimination from the Champions League.
There were fears that Erik ten Hag was hurtling towards the same fate as Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese manager was sacked following a dismal performance at Anfield.
The result didn’t pan out this way, however, Ten Hag’s Reds were resolute and thoroughly deserved their point despite their struggles to create chances consistently.
Van Dijk on United
Virgil Van Dijk was put up for an interview by Sky Sports following the bore draw at Anfield and the Dutch defender was not happy with how United performed.
“There was only one team trying to win the game but unfortunately it did not happen,” Van Dijk said.
“We were superior in all aspects, they were hoping to hurt us on the counter and they are buzzing with a point.”

£19 million Man United star superb at Anfield, he dealt with Salah and Diaz comfortably – Opinion
United fans are all in agreement following Diogo Dalot’s red card against Liverpool
This screams of sour grapes from the former Southampton defender as really, barring a few moments of quality, the hosts were so poor throughout and failed to muster up many chances of their own.
United, meanwhile, had a couple of moments with Rasmus Hojlund having the best chance of the game but the Dane couldn’t keep his composure and was denied by Alisson.
The Anfield club have a habit of being frustrated when a team doesn’t set up how they like it and Ten Hag’s decision to sit back and allow the hosts to come onto them was a good move in the end.
Liverpool’s frustration
Truth be told, the Merseyside club were far from their best and struggled to carve open a United side that had more than 10 absentees in their squad for the game.
Had Ten Hag gone toe to toe with Klopp’s men, United would have been blown away and there’s a good chance that the former Ajax manager would be out of a job right now.
It was the right decision from Ten Hag and if there is anger from the Anfield club about the way United set up, then the Dutchman can feel justified with his tactical move.

Jamie Carragher names the Liverpool midfielder who was ‘poor’ vs Manchester United at Anfield
Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on the performance of Dominik Szoboszlai for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United at Anfield.
The former Liverpool defender was not at all impressed by the display produced by Szoboszlai in the Premier League game.
So, what has Jamie Carragher said about Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai? Let’s take a look.
Criticism of Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai vs Manchester United
Well, Liverpool took on Manchester United at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.
Dominik Szoboszlai started the match for Liverpool. The Hungary international midfielder has established himself as a key player for the Reds this season, and I was not surprised at all to see him start in midfield.
Szoboszlai started on the right of a midfield-three in a 4-3-3 formation. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp decided to take him off in the 61st minute.
During his time on the pitch at Anfield on Sunday, the 23-year-old took one shot which was not target, had a pass accuracy of 76.3%, took 53 touches, attempted one dribble, and made two tackles, one interception, and put in five crosses.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was on co-commentary duty for the match on Sky Sports Premier League, and he was not impressed by the display produced by Szoboszlai.
When asked by Gary Neville if he was surprised to see Szoboszlai go off, Carragher said in the 61st minute: “No. I mean, he has been poor.
“One thing I would say is that he has got great running power that could cause them problems, but that is not going to happen now.”
Dominik Szoboszlai is a big player for Liverpool
While Dominik Szoboszlai did not have the best of matches for Liverpool on Sunday, I have no doubt that he is a huge player for the Reds.
The 23-year-old has been superb for Liverpool since his move from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023.
The young midfielder has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water. The Hungary international is very powerful with his shots, can run a lot, and is very dynamic in his approach to the game.
True, Szoboszlai struggled to hold his own against United and failed to impose himself on the match, but just because he was poor against the Red Devils does not mean that he is a bad player. Far from it.
urgen Klopp explains Dominik Szoboszlai substitution and identifies real ‘problem’ for Liverpool vs Man Utd
Jurgen Klopp substituted Dominik Szoboszlai after an hour of the goalless draw with Manchester United on Sunday
Jurgen Klopp insists the decision to substitute Dominik Szoboszlai during Liverpool’s goalless draw with Manchester United was to simply change the system.
Hungary captain Szoboszlai was withdrawn for Joe Gomez after an hour against United at Anfield as Klopp tweaked his setup to get Trent Alexander-Arnold into a more traditional central midfield role.
Having started his Liverpool career superbly, Szoboszlai’s performances have dimmed in recent weeks but Klopp rejected the suggestion that the substitution was to do with the 24-year-old’s general display in the goalless draw with Erik ten Hag’s men.

“No, not at all,” Klopp said. “It might have had until two or three games ago where it was slight, after the first impression he made obviously, it was always clear things will not always go like this.
“He is still a very young boy but he was exceptional today in a lot of situations in the game. Then we lost a couple of balls. It had nothing to do with the substitution or whatever.
“It’s just we have options to do it and we wanted to change system and then we have to think who we want. We wanted to have Joey then higher, properly on the wing. Same for Kosti (Tsimikas).
“So you need players in these half-spaces. Cody Gakpo right, Lucho (Luis Diaz) left, Mo Salah in the centre. Then we changed again with Harvey Elliott on 10. We played on a team who played man-marking.
“Each little tweak can make a massive difference if you can use it. Actually, we were there. We were there. We had these moments where we passed the ball to the outside, if there, find an overlap. Overlap was there in moments, but then shoot the ball to the outside of the net instead of letting them make a mistake.
“If you bring that ball in the six-yard box, it’s super difficult to defend because there are a lot of legs. It can be a Manchester United leg that brings the ball over the line. These were the moments where we were not really not. This was the problem.”
Klopp added: “If we score an early goal, it would have been great, it would have changed everything. We were ready to use that but we didn’t and then it became more and more intense.
“It was a really tough game. They had their counter-attacks. I say to avoid that with the quality they still have for 90 minutes would have been really insane.
“They had their moments, but not even close to what they could have had because of the counter-press. I liked that a lot. There were a lot of good performances. It was actually the last part.
“I said it before in the moment we scored those four screamers against Fulham, I knew that one day we would sit there and thought it would have been better not to shoot, if we would have passed. It’s completely normal, we were in a rush.
“You see that with the quality of the shots because these boys are capable of doing insane things from distance. But today were easy saves for Onana pretty much because the ball rolled into his arms. That shows the technique is not there, not because we don’t have it but because we rush the moment.”
