Breaking News: Toto Wolff makes Lewis Hamilton promise after he was scared of…
Toto Wolff has promised that Mercedes will win a race for Lewis Hamilton in his final year with the team after the seven-time world champion was forced to watch team-mate George Russell steal a smash-and-grab victory at the Austrian Grand Prix.
With 10 laps to go at the Red Bull Ring, Sunday’s Austrian GP looked set to be filed into the promising but unspectacular category for the Silver Arrows with Russell running in P3 and Hamilton struggling down in P6.

However, on lap 64 Max Verstappen and Lando Norris made contact while battling for the lead of the race, giving both drivers punctures that proved costly. The McLaren man was taken out of contention as a result of the damage, retiring his car, while his championship rival salvaged a P5 finish despite a 10-second time penalty.

The real winner from that exchange was Russell, who cut through to claim a second career win. Hamilton, meanwhile, was promoted to fourth in the order, despite picking up a five-second time penalty earlier in the race.
Assessing his weekend, Hamilton told Sky Sports F1: “Pretty shocking [for me] but really happy for the team. Everyone at the factory has worked so hard this year to get a result like this so big congratulations to the team and to George… well deserved.”

His team principal, however, was upbeat about the Brit’s chances of ending his long wait for a 104th Grand Prix victory. Hamilton’s most recent trip to the top step of the podium occurred in the penultimate round of his 2021 title fight and since then he has had just one pole position to celebrate.

“On the contrary [actually]. Things have come together. He had a brilliant race in Barcelona so we’ve just got to dive through this and we’re going to win a race with him this year.”
The results from Sunday’s race mean that heading into his home race at Silverstone next weekend, Hamilton trails Russell by 26 points in the Drivers’ Championship standings. However, with three successive top-four finishes, his results are clearly trending in the right direction.
