‘Strong interest’ in the 22-year-old youngster is reportedly held by Sheffield Wednesday.
According to The Northern Echo, the Owls are competing with Sunderland, Ipswich Town, and Stoke City for the striker’s services this summer.
Before being called back to Goodison Park in the second part of the previous season, Ellis Simms scored seven goals for the Black Cats.
The attacker later scored a dramatic equalizer in a crucial match against Chelsea in March. He only started twice for Everton, though, and his six-year time there might come to an end this summer.
According to the newspaper, Simms and Sunderland have discussed a possible transfer, but there is stiff competition for his services, and Sheffield Wednesday’s presence only makes things more difficult for Sunderland.
Simms’ future is still up in the air at Everton, who might decide to hold off on letting him back to the Championship until after they have strengthened their attack.
After Simms scored against the Blues, Sean Dyche praised his speed and power, but it’s obvious that he doesn’t like the attacker.
Compared to Sunderland, would Ellis Simms prefer to join Sheffield Wednesday?
Sunderland is currently one of the four clubs that are rumored to be interested in Simms, but theoretically, they are still the most attractive option.
The Black Cats are perhaps the most probable team to earn promotion next season, and the 22-year-old already has a fantastic rapport with the club’s supporters.
Their current crop have also proven that the Stadium of Light is one of the best places to develop young players and Tony Mowbray could help Simms become an incredible player.
However, it may come down to the money and if Sunderland aren’t willing to pay above the asking price then they are likely to lose out.
Questions may also be asked by both Simms and the club about where he fits into the team.
Simms was always his best alongside Ross Stewart, but the Wearside outfit excelled in a different formation towards the end of the season and there is no way that he would take the Scot’s place in the starting line-up.
