BREAKING NEWS: Rangers has finally revealed their new manager…..

There is “no doubt” Rangers fans would want “popular figure” Steven Davis to remain at Ibrox when a new manager is appointed, according to Daily Record journalist Ben Banks.

The reporter wrote a feature on Tuesday (10 October) looking at seven questions to be asked amid the hunt for a new boss with Michael Beale having been sacked over a week ago with the future of Davis among them.

Davis was asked to step into a temporary position and lost his opening game 2-1 to Aris Limassol in the Europa League but earned a first win with a 3-0 triumph at St Mirren on Sunday (8 October).

The 38-year-old suffered a serious knee injury in December and has to decide whether he wants to try and return to playing or now head into the world of coaching, and Banks says regardless of what he chooses supporters would like him to have a role at Ibrox in some capacity.

“The coaching staff question may arise over what happens with interim boss Steven Davis, who has a big decision to make over whether he goes down the coaching line or tries to continue playing after his serious knee operation,” he wrote.

“He’s a popular figure in and around Ibrox, and fans would no doubt be keen for him to stay in some capacity. Would the next manager allow that at say the expense of one of his hand-picked choices?”

Tough call

The Rangers hierarchy is facing a huge decision at Ibrox after the failed Beale experiment, and it looks as though Philippe Clement is favourite to take over with Kevin Muscat still potentially in the running.

It stands to reason that any boss who steps into the breach is going to want to bring their own trusted lieutenants with them, people they have worked with in the past and trust to do a good job.

Which leaves Davis in somewhat of a no man’s land. He may, of course, opt to try and resume his playing career but a serious knee injury coupled with the fact he is now 38 means he faces a big decision.

He has also now had a taste of what it is like to be a boss and maybe he has caught the bug for it. Davis is very well liked by supporters and those inside Ibrox so it would be great if he could stay involved, just quite how that looks right now is unclear.
