Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz react to Jannik Sinner’s Australian Open triumph

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz have all congratulated Jannik Sinner on winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2024 Australian Open.

Sinner overcame world No 3 Daniil Medvedev in five sets – after trailing 0-2 in sets – to triumph in a high-quality Australian Open championship match on Sunday.

The world No 4 was contesting his first major final, having achieved his previous best Grand Slam result by reaching the semi-finals of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.

The Italian stunned world No 1 and 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic in four sets in the semi-finals in Melbourne to become the first player to down the Serbian in the last four of the event.

Tennis legends Djokovic and Nadal were among a host of stars who sent their congratulations to the 22-year-old star, with the pair both doing so on their Instagram stories.

“Bravo Jannik. Deserved. Congratulations to your team and your family,” Djokovic wrote.

Wow!!! CONGRATULATIONS Jan. What a spectacular tournament, what a great victory for you, your team, your family and your country, Italy,” Nadal posted.

Sinner’s 20-year-old rival and friend – world No 2 and two-time major winner Alcaraz – expressed his satisfaction at the Italian’s triumph on Twitter / X.

“I am so happy for you Jannik! 👏🏻 You deserve it more than anyone! 🏆 Enjoy the moment my friend! 😀,” the Spaniard wrote.

Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill praised the world No 4’s personality and the role of his parents following the Australian Open final.

“What you see on Jannik on the court is incredibly respectful on the court, whether it be to the umpires or ballkids or linespeople, anybody around, the transport drivers, people at the restaurant,” Cahill said in a press conference.

“He’s been brought up really well. He’s got his feet on the ground. His parents are exactly the same as him. His dad’s got that goofy smile that Jannik has. He’s a chef. So we want him to come as much as possible because we eat really well when he’s around. They love it.

“A little bit sad they couldn’t be here but it’s such a long way to come from Italy for the semis or the final, and you never quite know. I think they believe in jinxing a little bit. They won’t get on the plane and come and ruin the mojo of everything.

“We believe in Jannik, we always have. He’s a special young kid. Even the way he hits the ball, it just sounds special. When you hit the ball the way he does, when you want to improve the way he does, when you move the way he does, he’s going to have success at some point.

“As I said a couple of days ago, our job as coaches is to try to fast-track that as quickly as possible and get him to where he wants to go quickly so he can have a long window at the top of the game.

“He’s been doing well. He’s absorbing everything and trying new things on the court, and he just wants to get better. I’m sure after this sinks in he won’t settle. He’ll never settle. He wants to get better.”
