The January transfer window is quickly approaching, and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are expected to make some new additions to their Premier League title challenge.
The construction of Liverpool 2.0 continues after Jurgen Klopp and his team were defeated yet again on Sunday.
Their disappointing 1-1 draw at newly-promoted Luton Town was only salvaged by a 95th-minute equalizer from Luis Diaz, and the game has given Klopp plenty to think about as the week begins. The Reds can qualify for the Europa League knockout stages if they beat Toulouse in France on Thursday, before hosting Brentford in their final Premier League game before the international break.
But the January transfer window is also on fans’ minds, with Liverpool set to have another opportunity to improve Klopp’s squad amid their ongoing rebuild – and targets are already being identified. Here’s a rundown of the most recent Anfield news.
A new opportunity for Zielinski has arisen.
Liverpool are preparing to make another bid for Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski, who is out of contract at the end of the season. Jurgen Klopp wanted to sign the Poland international in 2016, even meeting with him in person, but a deal with former club Udinese fell through.
Zielinski, 29, instead returned to Napoli, where he has spent the last seven years. Despite turning down a big-money move to Saudi Arabia over the summer, the Pole is no closer to securing his future with the Italian champions, with Corriere della Sport reporting that Liverpool are interested – though they won’t be alone.
FA won’t punish Diaz
The FA won’t charge Luis Diaz for displaying a message on his shirt after scoring a dramatic late equaliser to rescue a draw for Liverpool. Diaz’s father was recently kidnapped, with ELN rebels in their native Colombia demanding “security guarantees” in exchange for his freedom.
After coming off the bench and making it 1-1 against Luton deep into injury time, the 26-year-old winger lifted his shirt to unveil a printed message which read: “Libertad Para Papa” (Freedom for Dad). Diaz technically broke the rules by doing so, but the FA won’t take action.
Ibrahima Konate has refused to rule out a move to Paris Saint-Germain, despite Liverpool’s need for a new center-back. The 24-year-old France international is in his third season with Liverpool but has yet to establish himself as a world-class partner for the aging Virgil van Dijk.
In an interview with Canal Plus, Konate was asked about the possibility of signing for his hometown club despite never having been a part of their academy system. “If I said no, I’d be lying,” admitted the ex-RB Leipzig defender. “But, if you’re wondering, is it one of my goals?” Absolutely not.”
