Dejphon Chansiri, the chairman of Sheffield Wednesday, has stated that there was no disagreement about the club’s hiring practices when Darren Moore left his position as manager.
Just three weeks after leading Wednesday back into the Championship through the play-offs after a two-year absence, Moore left Hillsborough on Monday.
The club said that the 49-year-old left of his own free will, although rumors suggest that the chairman and the former manager were at odds over the lack of support during the January transfer window.
Despite Moore’s need for reinforcements, Wednesday only made one addition throughout the window—defender Aden Flint joined on loan from Stoke—while they were second at the beginning of the month and unbeaten since early October.
They lost steam after a six-game losing streak in March and April, missing out on automatic promotion.
Chansiri responded to inquiries from fans via the club’s website by stating: “Let me make it clear that Darren’s departure has nothing to do with our recruitment process.
“That holds true for the January transfer window as well as the procedure we’ll use in the summer transfer window. Additionally, it had nothing to do with the season’s budget.
“Regarding January, the recruitment team – which the manager has always been a part of since I was here – identified targets.
“My belief was that we had a Championship squad playing in League One but of course if the manager wishes to add to the squad, I offer my full support as much as I can, which has always been the case.
“Our main recruitment drive was last summer and I believe the squad was good enough for promotion.”
Wednesday made 10 permanent first-team signings and brought in three loan players following the completion of the 2021-22 season, after their bid to escape League One at the first attempt was ended by Sunderland in the play-off semi-final.
Those memories were banished by a stunning fightback at the same stage in May as they recovered from a 4-0 first-leg defeat to Peterborough to reach the final, before Josh Windass struck in added time at the end of extra time to defeat Barnsley at Wembley.
Chansiri hinted at undisclosed reasons for Moore’s abrupt departure.
“I was asked the question on Tuesday – ‘do you think fans would agree with Darren leaving if I clarified more?’ I said some fans may, some may not, it would depend on personal opinion.
“I said I do not like to talk too much about personal situations and I stand by that. The only thing I can add is that if I revealed the reasons, I am sure the majority would agree why we mutually agreed to go our separate ways.”
The chairman said he hoped to have a manager in place by the time the squad returns for pre-season training but added that the appointment “will not be rushed”.
Wednesday will bring the curtain up on the Championship season at home to Southampton on the evening of Friday August 4.READ MORE:
Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri insists Darren Moore exit had ‘nothing to do with budgets for the season ahead’
Owls fans were shocked by Moore’s resignation because they had been celebrating the 49-year-old’s role in supervising the club’s promotion back to the Championship. Chansiri answered questions from fans earlier this week at Hillsborough and has since clarified his answers in a second Q&A posted online by the official club channels.
In response to a query about Moore’s termination, Chansiri stated: “First of all, let me make it clear that Darren’s termination had no bearing on our hiring procedure. That holds true for both the transfer window in January and the procedure we’ll use in the summer window. Additionally, it had nothing to do with the season’s budget.
The recruitment team, of which the manager has always been a member since I have been here, defined targets for January. With my full support, Darren wanted to bring in one more, and we were very close to doing so before we got Aden Flint over the finish line. We were unable to finalize the transaction because the team we were negotiating with abruptly changed their mind, but that’s football.
He said that if the reasons for Moore’s mutually agreed departure were made public, “the majority” would support them. I was asked on Tuesday: ‘Do you think fans would okay with Darren departing if I clarified more?’ he said. I mentioned that depending on individual fan perspective, some fans might agree with me or not.
“I have stated that I don’t like to talk about personal matters a lot, and I still do. The only thing I can add is that, if I gave them, I’m sure most people would concur that it was for those reasons that we mutually decided to part ways.
