After a first-round bye, top seed Coco Gauff will commence her campaign at the ecotrans Ladies Open in Berlin against Ekaterina Alexandrova on Wednesday (June 19). The American captured her maiden Grand Slam title in doubles at the recently concluded French Open.

Gauff also made the semifinals in singles, losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. She has performed quite well this season, and has compiled a 30-9 record so far, and attained a new career-high ranking of World No. 2.

Gauff crashed out in the first round of Wimbledon last year, and as such will be eager to perform better on grass this time around. The field in Berlin is quite stacked, so she will need to put her best foot forward right off the bat.

Where is Coco Gauff playing?

Gauff is currently in Berlin for the 2024 ecotrans Ladies Open, a WTA 500 event. She’s a former semifinalist at the venue, making the last four here back in 2022. She was eliminated in the second round last year by Alexandrova, losing to her 6-4, 6-0.

Gauff’s second-round foe is World No. 20 Ekaterina Alexandrova, who beat Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. The Russian made the semifinals of the Libema Open last week, where she was the two-time defending champion.

Gauff and Alexandrova have faced off thrice before, with the rivalry leaning 2-1 in the former’s favor. The American won their most recent encounter at last year’s China Open in straight sets.

Alexandrova got the better of Gauff in Berlin last year, and the 20-year-old won their very first meeting in Dubai prior to that. The Russian has enjoyed considerable success on grass the last couple of years, and could yet again be the cause of the American’s early exit from Berlin.
