The Baltimore Orioles have been on a power surge as of late, and their hot streak reached historic proportions Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.
All four runs the O’s scored in the contest came via the long ball, starting with solo shots from shortstop Gunnar Henderson and designated hitter Anthony Santander. Then, with the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, center fielder Cedric Mullins came through with a third homer.
Mullins crushed a 1-2 pitch to right, blasting a two-run home run over the wall to walk it off for Baltimore. His bomb sealed the sweep over the Twins and helped the Orioles improve to 7-2 in their last nine games.
For as impressive as that mark is, Baltimore actually extended an even more notable streak thanks to Mullins’ clutch home run.
The Orioles have now hit 15 home runs across their last five games – exactly three in each contest. According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, Baltimore’s streak of five straight games with three-plus homers is tied for the second-longest by any MLB team since 1900.
The record currently belongs to the Orioles, who did so in six consecutive games in 1987.
Of the 15 home runs, Mullins, Henderson and designated hitter Ryan O’ Hearn have all hit three. Third baseman Jordan Westburg has hit two, while Santander, first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, catcher Adley outfielder Colton Cowser have all hit one apiece.
After taking Thursday off, the Orioles will have a chance to tie the MLB and franchise record with another three-homer game Friday against the Kansas City Royals. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 7:40 p.m
