As a done agreement to Liverpool is revealed, Florian Wirtz’s transfer value goes up to £46 million due to…..

The skyrocketing market value of Liverpool-linked Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz has been detailed, a figure that will almost certainly rule out a January move for the 20-year-old.

The 14-cap Germany international, set to compete at a home Euros this summer, has played an integral role for Xabi Alonso in his club’s stay at the top of the Bundesliga having started all but one league game this season.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Wirtz has bagged eight goals and 12 assists in 23 matches across all competitions this season. He is consequently being linked with a switch to several European big-hitters, including Liverpool.

But if Jurgen Klopp does fancy a summer approach for Wirtz, he may have to pay 86 per cent more than he would have a year earlier. As per CIES Football Observatory, which uses a stringent and precise economic calculation model, the player is currently worth £100.5m.

Last summer, he was valued at £54m although he was yet to reach the extra levels he has shown this season. Wirtz has registered all but two of his 20 goal contributions from his central attacking role, although has the ability to play on the flank.

One consideration for Klopp will be his injury history. He made his way back from a long-term cruciate ligament injury at the start of last season but has also picked up seven other separate small setbacks since his rise through club ranks.

There is also the debate whether Liverpool need to spend such a large amount on an attacking midfielder. During the last window, Liverpool did in the end manage to stock up on much-needed midfield targets after it became clear that Jude Bellingham only had eyes for Real Madrid.

Dominik Szoboszlai has perhaps been the stand out summer recruit while Wataru Endo’s exit to the Asian Cup is disappointing for Reds fans given his recent uptick in form. Ryan Gravenberch is starting to gain momentum while Alexis MacAllister is now back from injury.

All the while, Liverpool await the long-term comeback of Stefan Bajcetic, who showed his quality last season as Curtis Jones pushes his way into becoming a regular starter.

Liverpool have waited a long time to be able to call upon either Thiago or Stefan Bajcetic, but the end may finally be in sight should training returns go to plan.

Jurgen Klopp has not been able to call upon Thiago since April of last year, with a hip injury needing surgery, which was then followed by a series of setbacks.

It was an issue that the Spaniard had predicted for himself, such is his style of play, but he could be getting closer to playing a part this season – and the same could be said for Bajcetic.

The young midfielder has featured twice in 2023/24 but has not been seen in the last 22 games, though the club have a plan to reintroduce them into training in February.

“They will not be ready for the end of this month. It will probably be going into the next month to train with us,” assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders said of the club’s plan.

“But both [with] no complications, progressing.”

It is at least positive news, unlike that of the recent blow for Trent Alexander-Arnold, though we still have some time to wait before they return to full training and then competitive action.

A return to full team training will be a boost not only for them but the entire squad, from there they will need to adjust and train without issue before making a competitive outing.

This could be late February or even into March, a lot will depend on their fitness, stamina and how they react to increasing their work load after so long out of the team.

At this stage, though, it can only be seen as a positive, and their returns to training are likely to follow that of Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.

“Hopefully both of them – Robbo and Kostas – will be back at the end of this month to train with the team,” Lijnders told reporters on Friday.

Liverpool have just been given perfect news for Fulham Carabao Cup clash

Liverpool’s FA Cup draw is the ideal news for Jurgen Klopp and his squad going into their two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against Fulham.

Jurgen Klopp Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are in a strong position in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup

Liverpool’s favourable FA Cup fourth-round draw will be just what Jurgen Klopp dreamed of given the state of their squad and their January fixture schedule. The Reds are into the Carabao Cup semi-finals which means they have less of a winter break than they would’ve been treated to had they not made the final four of the competition.

And their hard-fought victory over Arsenal at the Emirates last Sunday means they have another FA Cup match to play towards the end of the month too. Klopp’s charges have another five games to come in January, and are expected to be without Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo for all of them due to international duty.

Klopp is also without another eight first-team members. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the latest name to add to the list of Dominik Szoboszlai, Andy Robertson, Thiago Alcantara, Kostas Tsimikas, Stefan Bajcetic, Ben Doak and Joel Matip. That means Klopp is unable to rotate as heavily as he might like to.

The German named a strong side at Arsenal but two of his four substitutes were Bobby Clark and Conor Bradley who, before then, had played a combined 452 minutes for the club at senior level. That was in stark contrast to the other two subs Ryan Gravenberch (1,054 mins for Liverpool pre-Arsenal) and Diogo Jota (7,686 mins pre-Arsenal).

So their winnable fourth-round draw, which will see either mid-table Championship team Norwich City or League One’s 10th-placed side Bristol Rovers welcomed to Anfield, is ideal. It will come after the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Fulham and before the mid-week league visit of Chelsea to Merseyside.

Arsenal v Liverpool - Emirates FA Cup Third Round

The weekend prior to the next FA Cup round also sees Liverpool face an in-form Bournemouth away from home. The Reds will undoubtedly go full strength against the Cherries given they are competing for the league title.

But given Liverpool have never beaten Fulham by more than one goal under Klopp, it is likely the manager will need to field a strong team for their second leg at Craven Cottage a few days later. That is unless they can go to London with a commanding advantage from tonight’s first encounter at Anfield.

And facing either Norwich who are winless at Anfield since 1994 or Bristol Rovers who haven’t played at Anfield whatsoever since 1992, Klopp will be optimistic of winning even if he names a weakened team. Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah, Owen Beck, Bobby Clark and Kaide Gordon will be among those hopeful of starting.

The tie should allow a rest for some of Liverpool’s most-used players this season. With Alexander-Arnold out, the likes of Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez should be rested. Klopp will also hope that some of his returning players can get some minutes in their legs.

Silva previews Fulham’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at Liverpool

The match might see Szoboszlai play some part to get his match fitness back after a few games out while Robertson and Thiago are nearing returns too. Liverpool fans will hope they can make the match-day squad that weekend.

It is certainly a far kinder draw than the Premier League leaders got in the last round, where they named as strong a team as possible to down Arsenal. Avoiding another such tie – especially when holders Manchester City face Tottenham and Chelsea have been paired with Aston Villa – is near as ideal as it could’ve possibly been for Liverpool.

But while Klopp might rest several key players, his side must of course not get complacent Norwich or Bristol Rovers. They’ll hope to be bouncing into the tie having just secured their spot in the final of the Carabao Cup versus either Chelsea or Middlesbrough. If they then win in the fourth round of the FA Cup, they’re only another two games away from a Wembley semi-final.
