Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga has secured a loan move to Championship club Millwall for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old spent the first half of the campaign at German club Augsburg but failed to make an appearance despite recovering from an initial knee injury. He made just one match day squad. He was subsequently recalled by Spurs and could make his first appearance of the season on his Millwall debut this Saturday against Queen’s Park Rangers, subject to international clearance.

Tanganga has made 50 senior appearances for Tottenham since making his debut against Liverpool in 2020 under Jose Mourinho. However, his last appearance for the club came in a short cameo against Manchester United last April and he played just 80 minutes of Premier League football in 2023. His last start came in last February’s 4-1 defeat to Leicester.

Tanganga has 18 months left on his contract and could assess his long-term options this summer, especially should Spurs wish to recoup a fee for the academy product. Millwall are 16th in the Championship table, 10 points above the drop zone but 18 away from the play-offs.

Alex Aldridge, director of football operations and recruitment at Millwall, said: “We are really pleased to bring Japhet in. Going into January we felt that centre-back was an area of the squad we would look to strengthen if the right option became available to us and Japhet expressed a strong desire to come to Millwall.

“Japhet is hungry and motivated to play games, he has some excellent attributes as a defender and has played at a very high level with Tottenham, so we feel he is a really positive addition and we look forward to working with him.”
