‘A disgrace’ – Mark Goldbridge has said what every Liverpool fan will be thinking today

Mark Goldbridge may be a Manchester United supporter, but there’ll be Liverpool fans worldwide nodding in agreement with his take on one massively contentious incident in the Premier League last night.

Manchester City came from behind to beat Everton 3-1, with the goal to give them the lead arriving courtesy of a penalty given against the Toffees for a baffling handball decision involving Amadou Onana.

It came four days after the Reds had a stonewall spot kick denied to them when the officials at Anfield somehow failed to deem Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard guilty of a much clearer handball offence inside the box.

The inconsistency wasn’t lost on Goldbridge, who posted on X at the time of the incident at Goodison Park: “So Odegaard wasn’t a penalty in a title decider when he moved the ball away but City get that. The officiating in this title race this season is a disgrace”.

When one of the highest-profile Man United fans in the world is adamant that Liverpool are bearing the brunt of shockingly bad refereeing decisions in the Premier League title race, you know the situation is chronic.

How the officials felt no need to penalise Odegaard for literally scooping the ball away like someone about to hand out a portion of ice cream, yet deemed Onana guilty of handling a shot from close range which struck underneath his arm is mind-boggling, to put it politely.

There’s one common denominator to both incidents – the presence of David Coote on VAR. The same man who had the same role in October 2020 when Jordan Pickford got away scot-free with breaking Virgil van Dijk’s leg, and who disallowed what would’ve been a Jordan Henderson winner for an imaginary offside against Sadio Mane (The Mirror).

In the context of Liverpool being deprived of two legitimate goals against Burnley on Boxing Day, the penalty given to Man City last night serves only to heighten the sense among Reds supporters that something is badly amiss when it comes to officiating.

We won’t go down the road of crying corruption or anything like that, but it’s impossible not to be enraged when looking at some of the decisions made in our matches over the past week and compare it to a huge and controversial call which went in the champions’ favour against Everton.

It’s even taken a Man United supporter to weigh in on our side!

Fabrizio Romano confirms transfer news which should jolt Liverpool into taking quick action

On Wednesday, Fabrizio Romano confirmed one piece of transfer news which could have implications for an on-loan Liverpool player.

The Italian took to social media to declare that RB Leipzig had completed the signing of Eljif Elmas from Napoli, with the Bundesliga club announcing the news at roughly the same time.

The journalist posted on X: “Official: Eljif Elmas joins RB Leipzig on €25m deal from Napoli, five year contract signed and sealed. Exclusive story, confirmed.”

The North Macedonian’s arrival at Leipzig adds another obstacle to Fabio Carvalho in terms of getting regular game-time under Marco Rose.

There have been recent reports that Liverpool are planning to recall the 21-year-old from his loan spell at the Red Bull Arena due to a lack of minutes, with the youngster getting just one Bundesliga start at the midway point of the campaign (Transfermarkt).

The signing of Elmas would seem to make it even harder for the ex-Fulham midfielder/winger to feature prominently for Leipzig, and that transfer could well see the Reds step up talks to bring a premature end to their player’s temporary stint in Germany.

Although Carvalho would then face an uphill battle to win his place in Jurgen Klopp’s side, he could be a useful squad option to compensate for Mo Salah’s absence during the Africa Cup of Nations, or possibly loaned out to a club where he’d enjoy more frequent game-time.

What looks pretty much certain is that his prospects in Leipzig now look even bleaker following their transfer news on Wednesday, and nobody would really benefit from him being left on the periphery at the Red Bull Arena.

Gakpo: “I Think I Can Contribute Even More”

The Dutch forward has backed the attacking unit to bang in the goals while Mo Salah is away.

Liverpool FC forward Cody Gakpo has backed the team’s attackers to step up in Mohamed Salah’s upcoming absence from the squad due to his participation in the African Cup Of Nations. Speaking after the 2-0 road win against Burnley, he said:

“For every attacking player who didn’t score for a few games, it’s always nice to get back on the scoresheet and Darwin did it with a very good goal.”

“For Diogo as well. When you are injured and you come back and score that’s always nice and good for the confidence. So really happy.”

“Mo is gone after the Newcastle game so we need the goals. Of course, I think I can contribute even more.”

Similarly, captain Virgil Van Dijk chimed in on the importance of the attackers for this team and also praised Gakpo for his play in the first half of the game:

“It’s always important for the guys up front to score goals. I am delighted for Darwin. Diogo, it’s the same story. It’s good to see the boys back on the scoresheet.

“I also want to say that Cody was outstanding, in the first half especially. It’s good to see. Everyone has to keep pushing each other. That’s the only way we can get better.”

“Others have to step up anyway. We have to deal with losing Mo and we have the players up front who can make the difference. Let’s see how we deal with it.”

The upcoming fixture against Newcastle United will mark the end of Liverpool’s festive slate of games. For Gakpo, it’s his first time experiencing English football’s most intense period, and he’s enjoyed it:

“The table is not looking in a bad place but we have to take it one game at a time, don’t let our heads go everywhere all over the place, just stay focused and keep doing what we are doing now and even improve more.”

“It’s the first time I played with this intensity — a lot of games in a few days – and it’s nice as if you play a good game you can play again and if you play a not-so-good game, you can make it good in the next game as it’s coming nice and quick.”

“Everybody wants the three points — also the opponents — so you have to work really hard every game and you have to be able to win games different ways.”

Liverpool have done well to hang in the title race across this crunch period and are well within striking distance. With key games against Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal ahead, Gakpo and the rest of the frontline must step up to keep the Reds at the top of the table.
