‘Never in the game’: Pundit says £34m Liverpool player looked almost invisible today

Liverpool vs Manchester City didn’t exactly live up to its billing on Saturday.

The Reds headed to the Etihad for what was meant to be an incredible battle between two of the best teams in the land, but, instead, what we saw was a cagey game that lacked quality at times.

Jeremy Doku looked brilliant, but other than that, most of the star players on the pitch didn’t show up.

Perhaps it was due to the recent international break and the early kick-off time, but this game wasn’t one for the history books.

Speaking on ESPN, Steve Nicol has been giving his verdict on this game, and he’s stated how disappointed he was by the standard on show here, naming Mohamed Salah as a player who simply wasn’t in the game at times at the Etihad.

Salah was never in the game

Nicol gave his verdict on this match and the £34m man.

“I was kind of disappointed in the game. All the things we spoke about in the lead-up with the early kick off and players being tired, unfortunately we saw all the problems we thought we were going to see. Although Haaland gets his goal, they didn’t have that sting in the tail, and Liverpool were the same, Salah was never in the game, Jota went off injured and was never in the game, Nunez had a header, but again, Liverpool didn’t have the sting in the tail to cause City problems. I feel like we were robbed of a game, there as no sharpness around both sides,” Nicol said.

Not his day

Salah has been absolutely incredible for Liverpool this season, but it just wasn’t his day on Saturday.

Nathan Ake did a great job of marshalling him down that flank, and while Salah had a couple of moments where he looked dangerous, he never got a proper sight of goal all afternoon.

The Egyptian was shut down by the City defence, but there’s no shame in not being able to do it against the reigning treble-winning champions of Europe.

We’re sure this is just a blip and Salah will be back in a starring role soon enough.
