According to reports, Manchester United believe Liverpool overpaid for Darwin Nunez after being beaten to the Uruguayan’s signature by their archrivals.
In the summer of 2022, the Reds signed Nunez from Benfica in a club-record deal worth around £85 million, with the 24-year-old signing a six-year contract.
Nunez had a mixed start to life at Anfield, scoring 22 goals in 57 appearances across all competitions for the Reds.
He faces a battle to start on a consistent basis, with Jurgen Klopp occasionally opting to play Cody Gakpo or Diogo Jota through the middle instead of Nunez.
Nunez, who will want to be on this list, has almost scored a goal in every two games this season, with a total of seven goals in 15 games, and Liverpool manager Klopp has noticed a significant improvement in his performances this season.
Klopp recently told reporters, “It’s completely different now.” The first year was difficult for him, and then for me, because you see this incredible talent and massive potential, but it is difficult to realize.
“I am a manager who can assist a player, but I need contact to do so; talking with the player frequently can speed up the process.”
“I couldn’t do it because I don’t speak Spanish and he didn’t speak English, but his English is much better now.” My Spanish is still lacking.
“But he’s settled in the team, and when you see him around the building, everything looks different, and he’s having a great time.” For him, this is just the beginning.
“It’s a good moment, and I hope it lasts forever.” Then I’m afraid of the highs he could achieve because there’s so much there.
“But now at least we found the real starting moment and let’s work from here.”
Despite Klopp’s recent praise, Football Insider claims that Manchester United ‘believed Liverpool overpaid’ for the former Benfica man after beating the Red Devils to the signing.
Man United allegedly ‘closely pursued’ Nunez but ‘calculated that the forward wasn’t worth such a fee at the time’ and dropped out of the race.
In other transfer news, Liverpool have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly before the winter transfer window closes.
Football Insider report that Klopp and the Reds ‘are in the market for a versatile defender ahead of the mid-season window, and Kelly has long been on their radar’.
As well as the two Premier League clubs, AC Milan are also understood to be ‘keeping close tabs’ on Kelly – who has made eight appearances in all competitions this season – with the centre-back out of contract at the end of the season.
