Liverpool has another ace matching Darwin Núñez who is in better form than Erling Haaland
It’s not just Darwin Núñez who is in great form for Liverpool. There is another forward for Jürgen Klopp’s side who is in better form than Erling Haaland.
Darwin Núñez was immediately likened to Erling Haaland of Manchester City as soon as he came at Liverpool.
Since the two arrived during the same summer and had a similar age range, comparisons were unavoidable.
However, the Uruguayan has taken some time to get used to Jürgen Klopp’s squad.
Liverpool can now rest easy knowing that Núñez is living up to the hype.
has averaged more goal contributions per ninety minutes for both club and nation this season than Haaland, according to a recent article on Liverpool.com.
It is completely different now,” Klopp said of his number nine.
“The first year was hard for him and then hard for me as well because you see this incredible talent, massive potential, but it is difficult to unfold it.
“I am a manager who can help a player but I need contact for that, it can speed up a process by talking a lot with the player.
I was not able to do that because I don’t speak Spanish and he didn’t speak English but his English is now that much better. My Spanish still not.
But he is settled in the team and when you see him around the building everything is different and he is in a very good moment. It is still only the start for him.”
But it’s not just Núñez who is enjoying a great run of form; there is another forward who is averaging a great goal return recently and who is going under the radar a little bit.
And nope, it’s not Mohamed Salah, although he too, as Klopp also noted, is in great shape.
It’s Cody Gakpo, who started the first few games of the season on a bit of a dry patch but has since exploded after scoring a couple of goals during the September international break.
In fact, so impressive has he been that in his last six starts, he has made seven goal contributions for club and country.
Núñez grabbed the headlines with his well-struck goal against Bournemouth, but Gakpo played a key role in Liverpool’s victory as well scoring the first goal on the night.
In his last five games for Liverpool alone, he has three goals and one assist, which is all the more impressive when you consider he only played the full 90 minutes in just one of those matches and only started three of the five.
Actually, when you look at his average goal return in the context of the minutes he has spent on the pitch, Gakpo has been performing better than Haaland, just like Núñez, since the September international break.
In that time, Gakpo has averaged a goal contribution every 68.8 minutes, while Haaland’s return is a goal contribution every 88.9 minutes spent on the pitch.
Gakpo’s last half-season at PSV Eindhoven before he arrived at Anfield saw him average similar numbers making 30 goal contributions, at an average rate of every 65 minutes.
At Liverpool, this is the first period that he has gotten close to that kind of form, and that’s a really positive sign for Klopp and his side.
It was always going to take some getting used to after moving up from the Eredivisie to Gakpo.
It took several seasons for Luis Suárez to begin achieving the same kind of success at Liverpool as he had at Ajax.
But in the end, Klopp is a master at getting the most out of his players, and it appears that Gakpo is also benefiting from a more productive second season at the club, in addition to Núñez.
