Who has been the Premier League’s best-ever acquisition?
Although there is no conclusive answer to this long-debated question, the same group of names consistently surface.
The names Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry, Roy Keane, and Sergio Aguero are all more than deserving of consideration, but Riyad Mahrez of Leicester City also deserves to be mentioned. On the BBC Match of the Day Africa Top 10, Yaya Toure claimed that Liverpool had signed a player to Leicester a few years ago who was even better than Mahrez.
Mahrez, who originally only cost £400k, went on to win a title and won the PFA Player of the Year award with Leicester before being traded to Manchester City for £60 million. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest Premier League purchases.
On the BBC Match of the Day Africa Top 10, Yaya Toure claimed that Liverpool had signed a player to Leicester a few years ago who was even better than Mahrez.
In fact, Toure asserted that Mohamed Salah’s acquisition by Leicester was a wiser commercial decision than Mahrez’s.
Salah is a superior acquisition to Mahrez
When selecting the top 10 African signings of all time, Toure expressed his opinion.
Okay, I chose Mahrez for Leicester at number seven, Salah for Liverpool at number six, Sadio Mane for Liverpool at number five, and myself for Manchester City at number four, according to Toure.
Salah said, “I put Roma at number six because it’s already a good time, really good.”
Difficult
Is Mo Salah a better player than Mahrez? Probably, but was he a better signing for Liverpool? Not in our view.
Salah cost £35m while Mahrez cost £400k, you could buy almost 100 Salah’s for the price it cost to sign one Mahrez at the time.
Salah still provided unbelievable value at that price, but in terms of a return on investment and value for money, there really aren’t many out there than can compete with Mahrez to Leicester.
The Algerian’s move to the Foxes may well be the best signing in English football history.
