The 22 year old has not truly had a chance to showcase his talents in the Premier League, but that could change next season.
In the past year, Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has made good use of his connections at Manchester City by bringing in Arijanet Muric, CJ Egan-Riley, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis to support the team’s successful promotion-winning campaign from the previous season.
With Harwood-Bellis coming back to the Etihad Stadium, the Clarets may decide to bolster another position in the back line by using their relationship to City.
Burnley reportedly approached City about sending Sergio Gomez on loan, according to transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri, but the Spanish left-back is delaying a decision because he wants to try to win over manager Pep Guardiola first.
But given that the 22-year-old will likely play regular Premier League games and that Burnley is a good fit for the loan, it makes sense for all three sides. While Burnley acquires a superb defender to support their chances of surviving.
Is Sergio Gomez a good option for Burnley?
City signed Gomez for £11m from Anderlecht, where he spent time playing under Kompany, but he was restricted to only ten starts in all competitions in 2022-23 – just two of those in the Premier League.
Gomez showed he is capable of playing in a number of positions, as most players can under Guardiola, which is something the Spain U21 international prides himself on.
“I view myself as adaptable. He told the Spanish radio station Partidazo de COPE, “I’m available for whatever the coach asks. “At City, they want me to play full-back, and [Spain U21 manager] Luis de la Fuente likes me to play there because that’s where I’ve always played.”
According to WhoScored, Gomez started six games at left back last season, where he felt most at home. Based on his limited playing time, there are some significant comparisons to be drawn with one of the best left backs in the business.
In fact, according to their statistical profiles, Andy Robertson of Liverpool and FBref’s comparison model are the two players that most closely resemble Gomez. As an illustration, Gomez averaged 0.25 assists per 90 minutes during the previous season, while 0.28 for Robertson
with neither player scoring themselves.
The pair attempted 81.3 and 78.9 passes per 90 minutes respectively, averaged 91.8 and 86.5 touches, while they won the same amount of aerial duels per 90 (0.77).
Gomez has a long way to go to show he can be a match for Robertson, and a move to Burnley under Kompany is his first real step towards doing that.
With a relatively low salary of £50k-a-week, according to Capology, Gomez could also prove to be an upgrade on current left-back Ian Maatsen.
But as someone described as “a full-back, playmaker, king of assists and winger” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Kompany would not just be strengthening one position, but two or three with one deal.

Burnley’s decision about a Southampton star will be determined by Nathan Tella Price in the difficult transfer market.
Out of all the loanees that Burnley wanted to bring back to Turf Moor, this one was always likely to be the deal which was perhaps up there with the most challenging to secure a return for.
Nathan Tella had a remarkable season at Turf Moor where his performances, goalscoring feats and personality helped to win him a place in the hearts of Clarets fans. The 19 goals he plundered put him comfortably at the top of the Turf Moor side’s goalscoring charts.
It was a breakout season for the 23-year-old. Before Tella rocked up at Turf Moor, despite having clear talent and promise he had not made a huge impact in professional football, despite picking appearances in the Premier League for Southampton.
But at Burnley, Tella truly found his feet and thrived under Vincent Kompany’s leadership in a side which laid waste to the Championship. In fewer than 12 months at Turf Moor, he eclipsed the number of appearances he has made at St Mary’s.
