JUST IN: Matthew Poitras Jeremy Swayman Breakout another blockbuster trade over bruins for Season

The Boston Bruins season is just getting underway, but fans have plenty to be excited about with Matthew Poitras.

In his first game of the season, Poitras assisted on the game-winning goal in a Saturday matinee against the Los Angeles Kings. David Pastrnak scored the goal and was quick to commend his teammate.

“Potsy did a great job,” Pastrnak told reporters. “I think he’s an incredible player. We haven’t seen him play a meaningful game in a while, so it was exciting to have him back. His strength on the puck is remarkable for his size, and that’s what stands out most about him.”

This was Poitras’ first game since January 25, when a shoulder injury required surgery. Though just one point may not seem like much, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery felt it was Poitras’ best game as a professional.

“For his first game in eight months, Matty Poitras was special,” Montgomery said. “I think it was the best game he’s played in the NHL, even better than some two-goal performances last year. You can tell how hard he worked during the offseason, and his strength and stamina are much improved. When he can stay on the ice longer, he’ll have even more chances to make plays.”

If Poitras continues to perform at this level, Bruins fans will feel more confident about the team’s center depth. Even when Patrice Bergeron was active, Boston struggled in this area, and adding another top-nine center could make the Bruins serious contenders for the Stanley Cup.

Montgomery noted that Poitras’ improved strength is a common development for younger players. When Pastrnak first entered the league, he also had trouble maintaining possession, but Poitras’ ability to stay on the puck is already a key asset. If he can increase his ice time, he’ll have more opportunities to contribute offensively.

It seems Poitras is on the verge of a breakout. He’s expected to see significant playing time and could prove himself as a top-nine NHL player.

Though the season is still early, and consistency will be key, Poitras is certainly a player for Bruins fans to keep an eye on as the year progresses.
