As Celta Vigo inquired about signing Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier, Phil Hay delivered Daniel Farke’s viewpoint.
According to Phil Hay, Celta Vigo and a few other teams made inquiries about Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
According to the Athletic journalist on Wednesday (11 October), Daniel Farke has always wanted to keep hold of the Frenchman.
Last season, he lost his place to Joel Robles and with Karl Darlow joining from Newcastle, his spot in the first team appeared to be in jeopardy.
There was a significant probability Meslier would have left the club if Farke hadn’t persuaded him that he would be the first choice.
Celta, a three-time Segunda League champion, is now a well-established La Liga side that consistently finishes in the middle of the standings.
They find themselves in the relegation zone right now and things could’ve been a lot different had Meslier joined them.
The Frenchman surely will be aiming to play for the national side and he cannot do that by being the second choice keeper.
Game time is paramount for him and thus far, he’s repaid all the faith that the German has shown in him and it’s working wonders.
The Whites aren’t allowing goals for fun like they have in the previous 12-18 months, and Meslier is regaining his confidence.
In unrelated Leeds United news, Phil Hay reports that big European teams have been monitoring a Whites player for some time and are still interested in signing him.

‘He’s changed so much’: Sky Sports pundit says 27-year-old is completely different after leaving Leeds
Jill Scott told The Overlap’s Stick To Football that Kalvin Phillips has “changed so much” since leaving Leeds United for Manchester City, and that he just needs a run of games to catch up.
Phillips, 27, has had a difficult time at City. After moving from Leeds, the 28-year-old England star has been troubled by injuries – and then finding it tough to get past Rodri.
The Spaniard was suspended on Sunday, but Pep Guardiola chose to leave Phillips on the bench.
Instead, he used Bernardo Silva out of position alongside Rico Lewis, a youngster. Phillips will undoubtedly be irritated.
Michael Owen stated that he should “pull his hair out.” Scott, who retired while on City’s books the same summer Phillips signed, says he had changed a lot since leaving Leeds United.
“I do think, if Phillips had a run of five or six games in that position – he’d learn so much.
He’s changed his game so much from Leeds to City. The amount of technical detail, needs to be playing,” Scott said.
Jill Scott: Kalvin Phillips has changed dramatically since leaving Leeds.
He would have to do so if he wanted to play for Pep Guardiola’s team. We watched what Jack Grealish had to go through during his first season at City, and he is now a regular for them when he is fit.
Phillips was in the same boat as Grealish. A big fish in a little pond, but when he joined a team, he quickly became just another fish – in a very large pond. Phillips will need to adapt quite a bit.
But, at this point, and especially following Sunday’s no-show, Phillips should be counting down the minutes until the January window opens. He needs to relocate, and the city should be willing to accommodate him.
