Boris Becker has called out Nick Kyrgios after the Australian tried to play down his dislike of his BBC colleague Andrew Castle following a commentary stint at Wimbledon.
Kyrgios is not playing at Wimbledon due to a long-term injury, but has still been making headlines while working for the BBC. While he has earned praise from many viewers for his insightful work in the commentary booth, Kyrgios has still ruffled feathers with his comments on social media.
He has clashed twice with Castle at Wimbledon. The first came when Castle made a reference to the time Kyrgios accused a fan of having consumed “about 700 drinks” during the 2022 Wimbledon final vs Novak Djokovic.
The second came when they weren’t even in a room together, with Kyrgios tweeting his disapproval of Castle’s “disrespectful” comments while watching Alexander Zverev against Taylor Fritz. Castle, who Kyrgios has previously described as a “clown”, described the serve-dominated match as “not captivating”.
Many would have expected sparks to fly between Kyrgios and Castle when they were put in the commentary booth alongside John McEnroe for Djokovic’s semi-final against Lorenzo Musetti on Friday evening. However, Djokovic’s straight-sets win over the Italian passed without incident – and Kyrgios even felt moved to tweet about it.
“Enjoyed being in the booth with Andrew Castle & Johnny Mac today!!!! Played off each other well,” Kyrgios tweeted. However, his comments were swiftly fact-checked by Becker, who replied: “Thought you didn’t like Andrew (to put it lightly…) Mac is obvious, since he is the best commentator in tennis”.
Becker, a six-time Grand Slam champion, used to be a regular on the BBC’s Wimbledon coverage, but he is not in south-west London this year. The German is currently banned from entering the UK after serving time in prison for bankruptcy-related offences. The 56-year-old was convicted in April 2022 of hiding assets and loans to avoid paying debts. He was released from prison in December 2022 and hopes to be able to return in 2025.

Like most in the tennis world, Becker has previous with Kyrgios, having clashed online with the 29-year-old in December. Kyrgios claimed tennis was slower during Becker’s time and said it would be “absurd” to suggest he would be just as successful today. Becker shot back by telling him to “respect the past”.
“They popularised the sport, they drew viewers to the television,” Becker told Eurosport. “You can see the result today. There has never been so much prize money, there has never been so much publicity as there is today.
“And that’s because of the legends… there was [Stefan] Edberg, [Mats] Wilander. The 90s were [Andre] Agassi, [Pete] Sampras. All these players make it possible for Nick Kyrgios not to play tennis at all this year and still be able to make a living from tennis.”
